U.S. BATHROOM REMODELING / COST BY SIZE
Bathroom Remodel Cost Per Square Foot.
A flat cost-per-square-foot rate can be misleading. Compare published U.S. ranges, then see how our model behaves when the same fixtures are priced in differently sized rooms.
Quick answer: HomeGuide's published U.S. guide estimates roughly $100–$500 per sq ft across different remodel types. A cosmetic refresh and a full renovation cannot be priced at the same rate. Scope, fixtures, finishes and location matter just as much as floor area. See costs by scope.

We ran our standard Texas bathroom project through the calculator at four floor areas. Every other input stays fixed: one tiled walk-in shower, a single vanity, replacement toilet, tile floor, 15 sq ft of wall tile, paint, one or two electrical points, an exhaust fan, professional installation and a general contractor. Same layout, standard finishes and no known hidden issues.
Likely model cost per sq ft
USD · Texas example
35 sq ft$551
50 sq ft$392
80 sq ft$254
120 sq ft$177
In this controlled model test, only floor-tiling quantity changes with room size; the shower, vanity, selected wall-tile area, painting, demolition and other allowances remain fixed. The result illustrates fixed-cost effects, not how actual differently sized bathroom quotes necessarily scale.
02 / THE NUMBERS
Four hypothetical sizes, one specification.
All totals below are generated by EstimateAhead cost model v1.0 (last updated October 11, 2026), using its Texas regional adjustment. The last column divides the displayed, rounded likely total by room size, then rounds to the nearest dollar.
Modeled planning estimates in USD. Low and high columns are project cost ranges, not per-square-foot prices. Four sizes, identical scope and fixture package.

This is a controlled illustration, not a claim that a typical 120 sq ft primary bathroom has the same fixtures as a 35 sq ft full bath. Different room types and more elaborate layouts require different inputs.
03 / PUBLISHED PRICE RANGES
The job matters as much as the room.
HomeGuide's published U.S. cost-per-square-foot ranges vary with how much work is included. They are broad guide figures, not direct quotes or measurements of EstimateAhead's Texas scenarios.
Minor renovation$100–$150 / sq ft
Flooring, vanity, paint and fixture updates.
Partial remodel$150–$300 / sq ft
Selected major replacements, such as a shower or vanity.
Full remodel$250–$500 / sq ft
Extensive work, potentially with custom finishes or layout changes.
Floor area helps estimate material quantities, but it doesn't reliably tell you how many fixtures need installing or how much plumbing work is involved.
Costs that generally grow with area
Flooring installation and floor tile quantities increase as the room grows. Extensive wall tiling and paint can also rise, but wall surface and floor area are not the same measurement.
Costs tied to individual fixtures
A shower, toilet, vanity and exhaust fan each need their own materials and installation. A 35 sq ft bathroom may still require most of the same fixtures as an 80 sq ft bathroom.
Costs driven by project complexity
Moving pipes, electrical upgrades, demolition, hidden damage, permits and project management depend on the work being done—not simply on the dimensions of the room.
05 / INDEPENDENT CONTEXT
What published cost guides say.
These sources describe different project samples and methods. Their figures should not be averaged with EstimateAhead's modeled examples, or treated as a validation of every component in our model.
Publishes an overall U.S. range of $100–$500 per sq ft. It separates minor, partial and full renovations, with different per-foot ranges for each. Published June 20, 2025.
Reports a $12,156 national average and $6,651–$17,662 typical range, based on 28,374 verified Angi Pro projects. This is whole-project evidence—not a directly comparable per-foot price. Updated October 27, 2026.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS
What a per-foot price leaves out.
Is a bathroom's quoted cost per square foot a fixed price?
No. The published rate depends on scope, materials, local labor and what the contractor includes. Ask for a written scope and itemized allowances rather than treating a rate as a guaranteed price.
Does a small bathroom always cost more per square foot?
Not always. Our size comparison deliberately holds the same shower, vanity and trades constant. A powder room without a shower can be substantially cheaper than a tiny full bathroom. In real projects, larger rooms often require extra wall preparation, tile, fixtures or labor that our fixed-selection exercise intentionally does not add.
How do I estimate my actual bathroom instead?
Start with room size, then specify the shower or tub, vanity, tile, electrical and plumbing work, finish level and state. Our bathroom calculator prices these selections individually. Its bathroom size input directly changes floor coverage; for additional painting, wall tile or extensive demolition, review the scope and selected surface area with a local contractor.
07 / PLAN YOUR BATHROOM
Use size as one input, not the entire estimate.
Enter your state, bathroom size, shower or tub, finishes and trade work to get a project-specific planning range. Compare item descriptions carefully: national installed-price guides can bundle removal or hookups, and our model has not been validated against matched itemized contractor quotes in every location.
