What you'll answer. Seven short sections: your location, the bathroom and its scope, the shower or tub, the vanity and toilet, floors and walls, plumbing and electrical work, and your finish level.
Each estimate is built from individual project components, adjusted with state level labor and price data.
What does a bathroom remodel cost?
There is no single price for a bathroom remodel. In our model, the biggest differences come from project scope, the shower or tub you choose, fixture and finish levels, whether plumbing or walls move, and local labor costs. The three example projects below, calculated with the same model as the calculator above, range from a likely planning figure of about $1,400 for a cosmetic powder room refresh to about $76,000 for a premium primary bathroom gut remodel.
Example project ranges
| Project | State | Size | Scope | Finish | Low | Likely | High |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic powder room refreshNew sink and faucet, vinyl plank floor, repainting, homeowner coordinates the trades. | Alabama | 30 sq ft | Cosmetic refresh | Budget | $800 | $1,400 | $2,000 |
| Standard full bathroom remodelTiled walk-in shower, single vanity, new toilet, tile floor, 15 sq ft of wall tile, repainting, one or two lights or outlets, exhaust fan, general contractor. | Texas | 80 sq ft | Full remodel, same layout | Standard | $14,500 | $20,300 | $27,700 |
| Premium primary bathroom remodelSeparate bathtub and tiled walk-in shower, double vanity, new toilet, premium stone floor, 100 sq ft of wall tile, repainting, major plumbing changes, electrical upgrade, exhaust fan, major layout change, general contractor, hidden issues suspected. | California | 120 sq ft | Gut remodel or new layout | Premium | $54,100 | $76,000 | $102,800 |
What affects bathroom remodeling cost most?
These are the factors the calculator prices directly. Each one changes the estimate only through the options you choose.
- Shower and bathtub
- Usually the largest line. A tiled walk-in shower sits in a higher national cost band than a prefabricated shower, and choosing a separate bathtub and walk-in shower prices both.
- Vanity and fixtures
- A double vanity costs more than a single one, and replacing only the sink and faucet costs less than either. A new toilet is priced as its own item.
- Flooring and wall tile
- Flooring is priced per square foot of exposed floor, about 85% of a powder room, 75% of a full bathroom and 70% of a primary bathroom. Wall tile outside the shower uses set areas of 15, 40 or 100 sq ft.
- How room size affects the model
- Room area changes the modeled quantity of exposed flooring. Painting, demolition and some fixture allowances use fixed scope prices, while wall tile outside the wet area is chosen separately. A larger actual bathroom may require additional work not captured by changing room area alone.
- Plumbing relocation
- Keeping fixtures in their existing locations avoids relocation costs. Moving one fixture or reworking several adds skilled labor and a permit allowance.
- Electrical work
- Replacing or adding one or two lights or outlets is priced separately from a larger upgrade with new circuits. Either adds a permit allowance.
- Layout changes
- Minor non structural changes and major reconfiguration each carry a planning allowance. Structural work needs a professional quote.
- Finish level
- Budget, standard and premium finishes move every priced item toward the lower, middle or upper part of its cost band.
- Contractor or project management
- Choosing a general contractor adds a 10% / 15% / 20% allowance for coordination and management.
- Hidden conditions
- Contingency rises with scope, from 3% / 5% / 8% for a cosmetic refresh to 10% / 15% / 22% for a gut remodel, and adds 3 or 7 percentage points when issues are suspected or known.
Why costs vary by state
Labor heavy items such as plumbing and electrical work follow state wage levels closely, while material heavy items vary much less. The calculator adjusts each item according to its own labor share, using a state labor factor built from trade wages and a state price factor built from regional price data.
For example, the standard full bathroom remodel above has a likely planning figure of about $18,700 in Arkansas and about $26,200 in Hawaii with exactly the same selections.

How EstimateAhead is different
Rather than applying one national average or a single cost per square foot, the calculator prices each component you select, such as the shower, vanity, flooring and trade work, then adjusts each one for your state. Scope based demolition, permits where needed, project management and contingency are added as separate, visible allowances, so you can see where the budget goes and which choices move it most.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a bathroom remodel cost calculator?
It gives a planning range, not a price. EstimateAhead combines published installed cost benchmarks, the options you choose and state level labor and price data. It cannot see your home, so hidden conditions, the exact products you pick and local contractor pricing can put a real quote outside the range. Use the estimate to set a budget and compare quotes.
Why does the estimate show a range?
Every priced item has a low, likely and high cost, and your finish level picks a point within each one. The contingency also differs between the low and high figures, and grows for larger scopes and when hidden issues are suspected or known. A range is more honest than a single number when final costs depend on things a calculator cannot see.
Does moving plumbing increase remodeling cost?
Yes. Keeping fixtures where they are avoids relocation work. In our model, moving one fixture adds a relocation allowance, major plumbing changes add a larger one, and either also adds a permit allowance. Plumbing work is almost all skilled labor, so it is also strongly affected by local wages.
Are permits included?
The model adds a permit allowance of $100, $500 and $1,000 when you select plumbing adjustments, electrical work or layout changes. Other work can also require permits; the calculator does not determine local permit rules. Check with your local building department.
Does the calculator include contractor or project management costs?
Every item assumes professional installation, including labor. Choosing a general contractor adds a project management allowance of 10% / 15% / 20% for the low, likely and high figures. Coordinating the trades yourself removes that allowance but does not subtract installation labor, even if you intend to do some tasks yourself.
What if my quote includes demolition or plumbing hookups?
Compare tasks as well as totals. An installed shower or vanity price may include removal, reconnections or cleanup that the calculator also models as general allowances. Our estimates cannot automatically identify a bundled contractor line, so do not add a task twice when preparing your final project budget.
Why do bathroom remodeling costs vary by state?
Labor makes up a large share of most remodel items, and trade wages and price levels differ from state to state. The calculator adjusts each item using its labor share, a state labor factor and a state price factor. See the methodology for the formulas.
Does EstimateAhead provide contractor quotes?
No. EstimateAhead is not a contractor or a licensed estimator, and it does not provide quotes. If we add links to contractor quote services, we may earn a referral fee, which never changes your estimate. See our affiliate disclosure.
